Abstract

Given that the agricultural sector is the largest consumer of clean water, effective water management is paramount in this field. In Turkey, agricultural irrigation management is overseen by local public institutions, irrigation associations, and irrigation cooperatives. Irrigation associations, in particular, play a crucial role in water management due to their inclusion of producers and their management of 23% of the total irrigation area. This  study aims to assess the comparative  performances  of irrigation associations in  Yozgat  province. The primary data for the study comprises secondary data obtained from the authorities in Yozgat province for 2022. The associations were evaluated comparatively using indicators related to water distribution and financial  performance. The analysis  revealed no significant differences between the five irrigation associations in terms of water distribution and financial performance. However, it was noted that the performance of these associations fell short of the desired level. This indicates the need for various improvements and developments to establish effective and sustainable business structures for irrigation associations. Furthermore,  financial  and personnel support from the  DSI and related organizations could be crucial in enabling the associations to provide more effective services.
